Drilling Assistant (40 hours)

Are you looking for a diverse job where technology, teamwork, and outdoor work come together? Then you are a perfect fit for SGGB!

Introduction to SGGB:

SGGB BV is a fast-growing company specializing in trenchless horizontal directional drilling. With projects in the Northern Netherlands and Northwest Germany, we work daily on improving and innovating underground infrastructure.

The demand for our services is increasing due to the expansion of the energy grid and the replacement of old pipelines. Therefore, we are expanding our drilling team and looking for new colleagues who want to grow with us.

We place great value on safety, quality, and the environment, but we find the atmosphere in the workplace just as important. As a family business, we work closely together in a tight-knit team with a pleasant and informal work environment.

No two days are the same, and that makes the work enjoyable. You work outdoors a lot with a great team. It is an excellent company to work for.

Travel time

A typical workday:

6:00 AM – 6:30 AM
You gather at our office in Winschoten to have a cup of coffee with your colleagues and make the final preparations.

6:30 AM
You depart for the drilling site in an SGGB company van or ride along in one of the SGGB trucks.

7:00 AM
You arrive at the drilling site. The workspace is set up: road plates are laid, and the necessary machinery and materials are positioned. Together with your team, you walk through the drilling path based on the drilling design and the KLIC notification. The entry point is excavated, existing cables and pipes are exposed, and the drilling rig is positioned. Simultaneously, the exit point is also excavated.

8:00 AM
The drill master begins drilling, while the assistant drill master accurately follows the path above ground with a tracking device. During the drilling process, bentonite is mixed and added to prevent the tunnel from collapsing and to remove the drilled soil. As a drilling assistant or mud-meister, you monitor the mixing process.

9:00 AM
The drill head emerges at the exit point. For longer bores, this process can take several hours. Casing pipes are then pulled through the tunnel. If necessary, the tunnel is first enlarged with a reamer to reach the correct diameter. After that, the pipes are attached to the drill rods and pulled in.

12:00 PM
Your team takes breaks to drink coffee and eat lunch. In our vans and trucks, we have sandwich presses, Skottelbraais, or even air fryers, so we take good care of each other during the workday.

12:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Depending on the length of the bore, the number of pipes, and their thickness, the workday can vary. Sometimes we are finished and back at the shop by 3:00 PM. Upon return, preparations are made for the next day, such as setting out pipes and replenishing the bentonite stock.

3:00 PM – 6:00 PM
With longer bores, it is possible that we don’t return until 6:00 PM or even later. If that is the case, we get to pick up food from our favorite local shawarma shop.
